New Zealand is a world leader in removing invasive predators from islands and predator fenced areas. However the need for a defendable barrier (e.g. the sea) or the social and geographic challenges of predator fencing, limit the scale at which they can be used. Therefore on the mainland, the current predator management approach is ongoing suppression of predator populations using traps or toxins. This carries a significant long-term cost as reinvasion must be continually managed.

The Remove and Protect approach, if successful, will make it possible to:
1. carry out predator control in terrain where it is neither desirable nor possible to construct predator fences
2. reduce our dependence on the repeated wide scale application of toxins at chosen sites
3. enable progressive expansion of a protected area as funds and confidence allow
4. create an environment on the mainland where, in time, ecological integrity could rival that of predator-free offshore islands
Research Method: (Focus Group) The Focus Group Agenda: We asked questions methodically, a structured questionnaire presented in a way the conversation makes sense. The data is geared towards the proposed solution to validate the functionality of the design solution. Finding user pain points will be delivered after presenting the first Lo-fi mock-up to the target user.

What: The Remove and Protect approach comprises four tactics: Minimizing reinvasion by establishing and maintaining barriers to predators. These include natural barriers such as large or swift rivers and alpine ranges. Completely removing predators from an area protected by the barrier(s) Detecting any predators that survive the initial removal or breach the boundary. Removing any predators that survive the initial removal or breach the boundary before they are able to re-establish a viable population. The ‘Remove and Protect’ approach enables communities across New Zealand to restore native biodiversity to levels normally only seen on predator free offshore islands, or within fenced sanctuaries—without the ongoing widespread use of aerial toxins. The complete removal of possums, rats and stoats will help eliminate bovine tuberculosis (TB) and other diseases spread by predators, and minimize the associated costs to farmers.

Why: ZIP is helping to protect native species by developing new tools and techniques to completely remove possums, rats, and stoats from large mainland areas.

Want: ZIP would like to help communities engage with the complete removal of Rats, Possums and stoats from mainland areas, and then protect those areas from reinvasion. Engaging New Zealanders in ongoing conservation efforts to respond to New Zealand’s biodiversity crisis. To develop an app that enables users to photograph wildlife in their area and receives feedback from community members. Images and feedback are intended to be publicly available on a web site and displayed in an engaging way on screens at the ZIP offices.

Design Thinking:

The team used the Double Diamond Model as the framework of the research. The project will be tackle in four phases:

Discover: Research insight into the problem (diverging)

Define: Synthesis: the area to focus upon (converging)

Ideation: potential solutions (diverging)

Deliver: Implementation: solutions that work (converging).
The focus group data with a structured questionnaire will be part of the decision tree regarding the design stage.
